Music 206 (Fall 07 - Winter 08): Live Computer Music

Meets Fridays 2-5, Atkinson Hall (CALIT2), room 1609. There will be no class October 19.

This is a continuation from LAST YEAR , although it is open to additional students who might wish to join.

This seminar was offered three quarters last year and will continue for two quarters this year. We hope to facilitate collaboration between composers, performers, and computer music researchers to realize musical projects that would be impossible without an interdisciplinary collaboration. The intention is not merely to put a researcher at a composer's disposition (or vice versa) to realize a preconceived idea, but rather to form genuine partnerships taking advantage of the creative ideas of all parties.

The focus will be on through-composed pieces of music, for which we have scheduled a concert during winter quarter. We will make plenty of space in the seminar for experimentation between composers, performers (instrumental and/or vocal) and researchers. Instruction is mainly in English.

Last year's Fall quarter was dedicated to analysis of real-time pieces, but we will not repeat that anew (you're welcome to follow Music 271 as a supplement if you're here for the first time). Instead we hope to move directly to the experimentation phase. Three or four projects from last year are likely to continue into this one; we're hoping for two or three new projects to form this Fall.
